WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.— On April 10, 2025, Palm Beach Atlantic University welcomed back alumni and former CIA intelligence officer Michele Rigby Assad as the featured speaker for the LeMieux Center for Public Policy’s annual series. The event, held at the Lassiter Rotunda, drew students, faculty, and community members eager to hear Assad’s powerful testimony and insights from her decade-long career in counterterrorism.

Rigby recounted her experiences conducting operations in the Middle East in a fireside chat with former U.S. Senator George LeMieux. She shared how she and her husband, both CIA operatives, often worked undercover in dangerous areas, relying on their training, faith, and intuition. She emphasized the importance of courage, adaptability, and following one’s calling no matter how unconventional.

The chat opened up with Rigby sharing what her job in the CIA was, to be sent abroad and collect information and intel and bring it back to the United States to try and help us.

"It was often hard to collect good information; there are lots of double agents, and people are often trying to spread misinformation,” Rigby said.

A significant portion of Rigby’s discussion covered her views regarding various countries. She shared insights about the complex relationships between nations, saying.

"Understanding the culture and values of our allies and adversaries is crucial. It allows us to navigate challenges with a better perspective,” said Rigby.

Rigby mentioned countries like Russia and China, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy and intelligence work.

“We must engage with these countries while being aware of their motivations and strategies. It’s a balancing act,” she explained.

Another main theme of Rigby’s speech was the concept of courage and believing that each and every one of us has a purpose and path. This message encouraged students to stand firm in their dreams and beliefs despite what others think. She also encouraged students to embrace challenges and trust in their unique paths.

“Ordinary people can do extraordinary things when their faith is greater than their fear,” Rigby said, highlighting the central theme of her talk.

"Eventually, you will get where you need to go,” Assad told the audience. “Trust him through the storms.”

Students in attendance were especially moved by her transparency and motivation.

“Michele’s story really opened my eyes to how faith can be active even in the most intense careers,” said freshman Alena Kelly. “She made me feel like no dream is too big as long as you stay grounded in your values.”

The LeMieux Center for Public Policy hosts distinguished speakers each year and aims to foster thoughtful dialogue about leadership and service. Senator LeMieux praised Rigby for her bravery and impact.

“Michele is a shining example of what it means to lead with faith and integrity in high-stakes environments,” LeMieux said.

As she concluded her talk, Rigby encouraged students not to wait until they felt “ready” to pursue their goals.

“Eventually, you will get where you need to go,” She told the audience. “Trust him through the storms.”

“Her words were a wake-up call. She showed us that integrity and courage are essential, no matter where we end up,” said Freshman Alena Kelly
